Metallurgical silicon to the electronics industry
Elkem has since the early 70's delivered Silgrain®, a unique grade of metallurgical silicon, to the electronics industry. Our Silgrain®, provides benefits to producers of high purity Silanes and electronic grade silicon.
Our customers produce polysilicon (a polycrystalline silicon), which is used in the manufacturing of semi-conductors, integrated circuits, optical fibres, photovoltaic cells, etc. Semi-conductors are used as microchips for computers, metal plates for solar panels, and so-called opto-electronic components for communication systems.
We have established valuable long-term relationships with the producers of polysilicon. More than 90% of all electronic components are based on silicon. Elkem serves around 50% of the world market.
The Silgrain® process, developed by Elkem provides a silicon material of high homogeneity in chemistry, grain structure and sizing.
