Technical services
Elkem R&D centers technical staff provide services related to development and construction of prototypes, handling hot materials, measuring the physical properties of a process and much more.

Got an idea, problem or equipment that needs testing?
Elkem technical services provides the complete package from engineering and design to construction and testing. Our engineers design and build complete test equipment ranging from tiny measurement equipment to full size furnaces weighing tens of tons. We specialize in high-temperature equipment, handling molten materials up to 2-3000°C.
Our staff include designers, mechanics, machine workers and electricians. Additional internal competences projects could draw upon include; Process development, Automation and Instrument engineers, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sensor technology expertise among others. This gives us the ability to execute multi-disciplinary projects in-house and secures complete control over quality and intellectual property (IP) in every step.
How to develop a prototype
When developing a prototype or test equipment, every aspect is not always known. Our designers and constructors work in close conjunction with experienced mechanics from our workshops to achieve the most optimal result. We are depending on close communication between all disciplines involved, and our ability to adjust tochanges from knowledge learned during the process are crucial for success.
We do most of our 3D modeling in Solidworks, perform risk evaluation and CE-conformity. Our mechanical workshop performall sorts of steelwork and the machine park includes; lathes, milling machines, multiple welders, plasma burners, plate shears, folding machines etc.
How to measure the physical properties of a process
When running a process or performing a test, measurements are our eyes and ears. Without reliable measurements of the property of interest, you don't know what is actually going on. We specialize in high temperature measurements, using traditional and experimental techniques. When normal contact thermometers can't be used due to temperature or atmosphere, optics takes over. Our engineers are constantly pushing the limits in order to achieve better measurements.
Storing, processing and presenting the data are essential for understanding a process. We provide the operator with necessary data during run-time and a comprehensive data set for post-processing.
How to handle materials above the melting point of steel
When dealing with hot materials, like liquid silicon or iron, graphite is often the material of choice. Graphite comes in many different qualities, and it is of utmost importance to choose the right quality for the specific application.
The need for knowledge and competence about the properties of the material has led to the establishment of a dedicated workshop for graphite with highly skilled machine workers. We create complex constructions in graphite using lathes and milling machines.
