Key advantages of Elkem Carbon pitches are:

  • Good thermal stability -  suitable for storage in high ambient temperature conditions
  • Low sodium content
  • Low ash content

Coal tar pitches produced by Elkem Carboderivados are available at different softening points, and can be supplied in both liquid and solid state.

Application

Major applications include:

  • Pitch as binding agent for anodes, carbon pastes/electrodes and refractories
  • Aromatic oils as feedstock for carbon black production
  • Naphthalene for the chemical industry

Coal tar pitch

The pitch is used as a binder agent in production of the following products:

  • Anode paste and ramming paste for lining of electrolytic pots in the aluminium industry
  • Søderberg electrode paste for submerged arc furnaces in the ferro-alloys industry
  • Carbon electrodes for production of silicon
  • Pitch-bonded refractory materials

Impregnation pitch is used for:

  • Impregnation of refractory bricks

Spheroidal pitch in its special form provides easy handling with low dust emission. It is used for special applications in pitch-bonded refractory materials.

Key advantages of Elkem Carbon pitches are:

  • Good thermal stability - suitable for storage in high ambient temperature conditions
  • Low sodium content
  • Low ash content

Coal tar pitches produced by Elkem Carboderivados are available at different softening points, and is supplied in both liquid and solid state.

Naphthalene

Elkem Carboderivados produces both naphthalene oil and methyl naphthalene.

Naphthalene oil is used in the production of:

  • Phthalic anhydride
  • Concrete admixtures
  • Tanning agents
  • Intermediate dyes
  • Plasticizers
  • Mothballs and pesticides

Special oils

The range of oils and uses include:

  • Anthracene oil used as raw material for carbon black production
  • Creosote oil for treatment and preservation of wood
  • Carbolic oil used as a raw material for the production of disinfectants, refined phenol, cresol and xylenol
