Photo description: The location of Elkem Carbon Fiskaa.
This blog post was written by second year trainee Marie Stoknes.
Elkem Carbon Fiskaa (ECF) started producing high quality electrode paste for use in smelting processes worldwide in 1919, only two years after the invention of the Søderberg electrode. Today ECF has ten furnaces for production of electrically calcined anthracite which together with a binder is used in Søderberg electrode paste, ramming paste for aluminium cells, furnace lining materials and tap hole repair materials. The plant has also dedicated three furnaces to the production of electrically calcined petrol coke, resulting in ELGRAPH® recarburisers used in the iron and steel industry.
Søderberg electrode paste produced as cylinders to the left and as briquettes to the right.
My main task is to run one part of a recycling process where spillage from high quality electrode paste is recycled in production processes instead of being deposited. This process is half-automated, involving both logistics and several transport facilities. Being responsible for transport facilities requiring electrical and mechanical maintenance gives me an insight to challenges in daily operations and a “hands on” experience. In addition to the recycling process I try to find actions resulting in a reduction of spillage generated in daily routines.
I am also involved in various tests concerning other carbon products where I plan and run sample collections followed by sieving analysis. Being involved in both daily operations and improvement projects make my days at ECF varied and exciting.
And finally… what is a blog post without an overload of boasting photos from Kristiansand and the surrounding area in order to show you what a stay at Elkem Fiskaa can offer ;)
Beautiful hiking area in the neighborhood and sea kayaking in sunny weather.
Via Ferrata in Valle. Playing golf. Trekking inSetesdalsheiene
Gathering at “Fiskebrygga” every Tuesday during the summer and enjoying life at sea.
Kind regards from Marie :)
