Elkem Bjølvefossen shuts down furnace

Owing to a difficult market for foundry products Elkem Bjølvefossen has resolved to shut down a furnace that produces ferrosilicon magnesium (FSM) for about a month from 6 April. About 50 employees will be laid off in this period.

This was communicated to the employees in an in-house meeting today. Who will be laid off will be decided this week.

The demonstration furnace for handling of waste from the aluminium industry, spent pot lining (SPL), will not be affected by the layoffs.
