The management of Elkem Metal Canada Inc. confirmed the signing of a steam supply contract with Rio Tinto Alcan's Vaudreuil plant.
- This agreement will consolidate jobs and secure the future of the Elkem plant in Saguenay, said Jean Villeneuve, SVP of Elkem Foundry Products.
Elkem Metal Canada Inc. is to invest 25 mill. CAD in an energy recovery plant at its plant in Saguenay. The plant will produce steam which will be used at the nearby alumina plant of Rio Tinto Alcan. The contract will run for 10 years and may be renewed at the end of the agreement.
- This investment will not only generate new revenue, but also strengthen our environmental position with a reduction of 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency is one of the most important ways to reduce the carbon footprint of industry, and the recovery of 24 MW of energy from our process consolidates Elkem’s environmental leadership in our industry, said Villeneuve.
Elkem Metal Canada Inc. is one of the largest producers of ferrosilicon in North America. The customers are mainly steel mills and foundries.
