Elkem Thamshavn shuts down furnace 2

Elkem Thamshavn AS resolved today to shut down furnace 2 from 1 June until 15 August 2009. Furnace 1 is already out of production for extensive rehabilitation, and is also due to be restarted in August once that work has been completed.

Both furnaces produce silicon and microsilica, and the shutdown relates to a shortage of demand for these products.

One consequence of the decision is that lay-off notices will be issued. The scope of these lay-offs will be discussed with the unions at the company.

The workforce was informed of the decision at a town hall meeting held today at 13.00.

Current investment in a new energy recovery facility will not be affected by the above-mentioned decision.
