Elkem Thamshavn to shut down furnace for relining

Elkem Thamshavn AS has resolved today to shut down the smallest of its silicon furnaces for relining and other rehabilitation. This unit accounts for about 35 per cent of the plant’s capacity. Work on the furnace will be largely performed by existing employees, which means that nobody will be laid off in this connection.

The planned rehabilitation programme is expected to take about 4.5 months.

Although Elkem Thamshavn is feeling the effects of the financial crisis, it is relatively well covered with customer contracts for 2009.

Unless something unexpected happens in the market, plans call for the furnace to be brought back into operation during June.
