Elkem cuts back on ferrosilicon and silicon production

Due to the prevailing weak market conditions for ferrosilicon and silicon, Elkem has decided to temporarily halt production at three more furnaces in Norway starting mid-December.

The production stop will last until market conditions have improved. The plants will carry out maintenance projects, training and facility upgrades, and all assets will be maintained and be ready for operations when market demand returns to normal levels.

Elkem recently stopped production at one furnace at the Elkem Salten plant. With production now being halted at three more furnaces, Elkem will reduce its output of silicon and ferrosilicon by 20,000 metric tons in the first quarter of 2012, compared with the same period in 2011.

“Elkem is continuously monitoring the financial development in Europe and the demand for its products. Given a more negative development in the European economy, we will evaluate further cut-backs in production,” says Thomas Fredrik Næss, Vice President of Sales & Marketing of FeSi in Elkem.
