Our lab team consists of 18 highly educated and competent staff, who are ready to answer all your questions about applications, develop new applications related to special material types, quality control, performance of instruments and environmental analysis. We provide knowledge in sampling, materials characterisation and analysis of raw materials, ferrosilicon, silicon, silica and cast iron with use of different types of instruments to assure that your testing solution completely meets your requirements and performs at it's best.

Lab Services

Elkem Technology lab is a part of Elkem Technology R&D center with core competencies in consulting and lab project services, analysis of raw material, environmental analysis, trace elements in silicon and quarts and materials characterisation. The lab offers wide range of analytical techniques, laboratory instrumentation and testing methods, providing the critical analysis information clients need for trouble-shooting, research and quality control.

Services of the materials characterisation team

Materials characterisation and microstructural measurements are vital parts of Elkem’s progresses in the fields of process and material understanding. By gaining material insights, researchers and process engineers are able to understand the relation between microstructure and properties of their material. Based on exact microstructure observations scientists can develop both existing and new products.

The group consists of 6 materials engineers with a wide experience in materials characterisation. Our backgrounds are from material, metallurgical and chemical sciences. We offer our expertise to solve challenges within raw materials, processes and products for both Elkem and external customers.

We investigate most types of materials, and have special skills on aluminium, cast irons, silicon, steels, ferro-alloys, raw materials (coal, coke), plus ceramics and microsilica.

For over 15 years we have employed image analysis, and have gained great experience in the field of digital image processing. Developing measuring tools through batch processing of images is one of the main tools to solve today's material challenges. We offer beginner courses in image processing and programming.

The laboratory consists of a "state of the art" Field Emission Gun Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM), several optical microscopes and sample preparation tools.

Services of the Chemical lab team

The team consists of 8 people servicing customers with different types of material and analytical equipment. Highly experienced and wide competencies in different fields, helps supporting customers need.

The goal of chemical analysis is to identify and quantify the compounds of interest in a given sample.

Typical analysis:
  • Coal, coke, quartz and additional raw materials to the silicon and other processes by ISO standardized methods.
  • Cast iron and different alloys.
  • Gases from different installations.
  • PAH in different environmental samples.
  • Slag and process samples from the research projects
  • Impurities in silicon.
  • Analysis of ferrosilicon
  • Develop new methods for analysis of inorganic samples.


Services of the lab projects team

The lab projects team consists of 4 highly competent and committed experts in the areas of sampling, chemical analysis and development of analytical methods. Our expertise is mainly focused on silicon, ferrosilicon, silica, quartz, coal, coke, cast iron and process gases.


Our services:

  • Consulting in sampling, handling and preparation of samples
  • Analysis and methodology development for x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Expertise in methodology development for Inorganic materials
  • Analysis and methodology development for ICP-OES and ICP-MS. Prepare, dissolve and develop method for analysis of silicon, ferrosilicon, quarts and raw materials.
  • General method development for element analysis of several material types with use of different analytical techniques.
