Elkem Silicon Materials is Elkem’s largest business area and one of the world's leading suppliers of metallurgical silicon and microsilica. We deliver special products to customers in the chemical, solar, electronics, aluminium, construction, refractory and oilfield industries worldwide.

Elkem Silicon Materials has five silicon plants that produce silicon and microsilica, two centres for research and development, three quarts producing operations, units for further processing of the plant’s products and an extensive global sales network.

Elkem Silicon Materials has  a yearly silicon production capacity of 215 000 tonnes. We are the world’s leading supplier of microsilica with a volume of 300,000 tonnes, of which 100,000 tonnes are sourced from external plants, processed and then sold on to customers around the world. Sourcing and further processing of microsilica constitutes a significant part of the organisation. Applications of our products

Elkem Silicon Materials bring value to our customers by providing specialty products being tailor made for each application. The end products are all surrounding us in our daily life.

Silicon has a large number of varied applications. It improves the characteristics of aluminium and is a vital ingredient in electronic products. It is the main ingredient both for production of high purity silicon for solar cells and for chemical processing converting silicon to silicone. Silicone is found in a large variety of daily life products as cosmetics, paint, coatings etc.

Microsilica is an extremely fine-grained silicon fume that is used as an additive in concrete, as lining in oil wells, as an asbestos substitute, in refractory materials, in fertilisers and in plastics.

Elkem Silicon Materials operates three quartz mines, two in Norway and one in Spain. Elkem Tana in the North of Norway is the largest mine, delivering quartzite to ferrosilicon and silicon producers to both internal and external customers.
