Elkem has offered silicon for production of kiln furniture (Si3N4-bonded SiC, SiSiC, Si3N4) since the late 1980’s. Our silicon is customised to provide the best possible performance for your specific process, such as for slip casting or silicon infiltration. We have extended our product portfolio over the years to meet new and challenging customer requirements.
Areas of silicon application in ceramics
Silicon for kiln furniture
Silicon for ceramic brake discs
Silicon for heating elements
Silicon for ceramic filters
Silicon for ceramic body armour
Silicon for silicon nitride production
Silicon for jet engines
Elkem offers silicon for use in production of ceramic brake discs, both within the automotive and the aircraft industries. Ceramic matrix composites (CMC’s) such as carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide (C-SiC) offer superior properties at high temperatures vs. traditional iron discs. Our silicon is used in the liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) step during production of ceramic brake discs.
Elkem offers silicon suitable for production of heating systems such as heating elements made of silicon infiltrated silicon carbide (SiSiC) and molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2). Radiant tubes (SiSiC) represents another example. Our silicon is used in the liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) step during production of SiSiC components.
Elkem offers silicon for use in production of ceramic filters, such as diesel particle filters within the automotive industry and filters for wastewater purification. Our silicon can be tailor-made to meet customers’ specific needs.
Elkem offers silicon for use in production of ceramic body armour (SiSiC, Si3N4, Si3N4-bonded SiC). Our silicon is used in the liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) step during production of reaction-bonded silicon carbide bodies (SiSiC).
The main production process for silicon nitride powder is direct nitridation of silicon powder (3Si + 2N2 → Si3N4). Elkem offers a range of silicon powders suitable for the direct nitridation process. We are now offering silicon qualities as high as 99.99 % to meet new customer requirements.
