Statue of Unity

The world’s tallest statue constructed with Elkem Microsilica®

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity. The monument, 182 metres above the Narmada River in the western Indian state of Gujarat is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbai Patel, part of the Indian independence movement of 1947. The statue is double the height of the Statue of Liberty in the USA and five times taller than the Statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Brajesh Malviya, General Manager of ESM construction activities in India, said work on the structure commenced three years ago. “We worked closely with the engineers because there were many different types of concrete used in the structure. In particular, the engineers were looking for high strength concrete with resistance to chlorides and sulphates. The logistics were also a real challenge as the project was a long distance from our warehouse and they had special delivery requirements. We supplied over 2000 mt of Elkem Microsilica to the project over a three year period”

Not content with this record, Elkem Silicon Materials India is now working on an even taller new structure.

According to Surendra Sharma from Elkem’s office in Mumbai, Elkem will be supplying Microsilica for a statue in the western state of Maharashtra, a memorial to the Maratha warrior King Shivaji that will be even higher!
