Thames Tideway

Elkem Silicon Materials is heavily involved in London’s impressive Thames Tideway Tunnel project.

For over one hundred years, all of London’s excess waste water has been collected in storm drains and discharged undiluted into the River Thames.

This is all to change upon the construction of the Thames Tideway project’s two tunnels, running 25 km through London, which will tackle the problem of overflows from these Victorian sewers.  The first phase of construction of the new tunnels has started, using two of Elkem’s Microsilica products -  Emsac 500S and 920D.

The ESM team has developed a dry silo sprayed concrete mix together with our customers for this purpose, which allows a contractor to use and install a sprayed concrete lining continually, when planning or delivery restrictions into central London at weekends would otherwise hinder the process. The project, which is due to cost over $6 billion, is planned to finish in 2023.
