Our renowned Elkem Vikings set their feet upon Japanese soil at this year's UNITECR, experiencing true "omotenashi", the quintessential spirit of Japanese hospitality.

The 16th Biennial Congress of the United International Technical Conference of Refractories (UNITECR) took place Oct. 13-16 in Yokohama, Japan, and provided fertile tilling ground for our Elkem Silicon Materials Viking team (who surely hosted one of the most popular, colourful booths at the congress!).

The concept of the UNITECR 2019 was: “Refractories for the Future: Collaboration among Customers, Manufacturers and Academia in Pursuit of Future High-Temperature Technology.” The plan was that the congress would present the world with the future of high-temperature technologies, to help in making an environmentally-friendly world, also by conserving natural resources. Our ESM team (always in quick pursuit of satisfied customers) was in the right place at the right time to put their hands to the oars of this plan.

Colleague Dr. Hong Peng also presented a well-received joint-effort paper, entitled: “Slag resistance of no-cement refractory castables”, co-authored by herself, ESM's Dr. Bjørn Myhre and Wuhan University of Science and Technology.

All in all, the congress was deemed a great success!
