Frédéric Jacquin, Senior Vice President of Elkem Silicones, shared his insights regarding “The Diversity Challenge” and how diversity provides opportunities for growth and education within the industry.
Diversity requires management acceptance from the top down acknowledging differences and embracing how these differences make us all stronger and unified.
Overall highlights on diversity:
- Global reach
- Transparency and sensitivity to listen and align with employees, customers, and markets
- Acceptance of each culture and their mores
Elkem is a truly global and diverse company with locations across Asia, Europe, North America and South America. These differences are teaching / learning experiences for all and are exhibited within the Elkem culture, for example, sensitivity to time zones, different culture’s holidays, and acceptable in-country behaviors.
Fred was unable to answer the questions during his session, but we have included his responses below.
- Any thoughts on how diversity improves culture? TBA
- Is there a positive or negative impact of diversity on overall sustainability (namely environmental) efforts? TBA
- How does ELKEM approach the sustainability / circular economy challenge?
At Elkem, we have identified the most material issues as climate or GreenHouseGas (GHG)/CO₂ emissions and the chemical regulatory context. For GHG, we have excellent upstream performance with extensive use of renewable energy and are pushing further to bio-sourced C without biodiversity impacts. For the future, we will concentrate on reducing fossil fuel dependence by increased “bio” or synthetic organic means. In China, we want to lead the way by early adoption of renewable energy and a holistic resource efficiency approach. The regulatory context remains a constant challenge and this, just as much as climate, will drive our thinking to select those businesses that will still be our focus in 10 or 15 years’ time.
