Elkem Silicones celebrates BLUESIL™ providing long-lasting protection for over one million EVs at CIIE 2021

Elkem Silicones, a technology leader with over six decades of history in the silicone industry, showcased its wide range of products and technical solutions at the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE 2021). Not only is it the fourth time that Elkem has been present at the expo, today also marks the first anniversary of its Delta workshop that produces silicones for Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (H&EVs) as well as a milestone that the company has so far provided protection for more than one million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. Lise Nordgaard, the Norwegian Consul General in Shanghai, was present at the celebration.

One million EVs on the road are protected by Elkem Silicones

As countries around the world accelerate the transition to a green, low-carbon circular economy, the EV industry is in for a new round of rapid growth. Here silicone products are playing an increasingly important role in improving battery safety and battery life and providing long-lasting protection for EVs. Elkem Silicones has developed its silicone foam technology as early as 2000 and started to customize it for use in power batteries for a global leader in the EV sector in 2010. The company also supported the customer to set up a giga factory in Shanghai.

Up till now, Elkem Silicones has more than 10 years of experience in providing innovative solutions for high-performance electrical and electronic components of EVs. And it has achieved remarkable results in the segment – more than one million EVs on the road have battery packs protected by Elkem Silicones, and one in six EVs is using Elkem Silicones’ products in the battery packs and cables.

One year anniversary of the launch of Elkem Silicones’ Delta workshop

At the event, the company celebrated the first anniversary of the creation of its Delta workshop in Shanghai Xinzhuang Industrial Park. The workshop is dedicated to developing silicones for H&EVs in order to help EV companies accelerate innovation; break through bottlenecks; produce safer, more reliable, more comfortable, zero-failure vehicles; and improve their market competitiveness.

“Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, global EV sales grew by 43% in 2020, and China stands out as the largest EV market with the most numerous facilities, including charging stations. According to statistics, it is expected that 20% of all vehicles sold in China in 2025 will be electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-powered. This figure is expected to rise to 50% in 2035,” said Mr. Frederic Jacquin, Senior Vice President of Elkem Silicones.

“As China puts forth its ‘dual carbon’ goals, Elkem Silicones is also committed to aligning itself with China’s emerging development pattern, playing an active role in building a green, safe and sustainable urban ecology and helping China accelerate the building of a green and low-carbon travel system. In addition to EVs, Elkem Silicones will also participate in the construction of smart buildings, smart cities and electric transportation systems to help China develop an infrastructure system that meets the needs of future economic and social development,” Mr. Jacquin added.

To achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050

It is worth noting that, as an strong proponent of climate and environmental protection, Elkem, in its recently released climate roadmap, has committed to reducing total fossil CO₂ emissions by 28% by 2031 and realizing net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050. To this end, Elkem has already increased the share of biomass in its process to more than 20% and will ramp this up to 50% by 2030. Moreover, 83% of the electricity that it uses for operations is from renewable sources.

More than 30 innovative solutions were showcased at CIIE 2021

At the show, Elkem Silicones presented over 30 innovative solutions, including cutting-edge solutions for the fabric, synthetic leather, construction, energy, food and health care industries. Elkem Silicones is dedicated to enabling customers to achieve circularity through Reduction, Reuse, Recycling and the use of Renewable resources. It also helps them create and improve essential innovations, such as electric mobility, digital communications, health and personal care, smart cities and solar and wind energy. At present, Elkem Silicones has provided more than 2000 innovative solutions for the Chinese market and has worked with many different customers to help shape a sustainable future.

These comprehensive partnerships for strategic engagements will be the critical part of a package of long-term support for China and our most valued clients. We will make available the state-of-art technologies and products to create a mutually beneficial, win-win innovation ecosystem with the Chinese government and our clients and partners in order to contribute to the high quality, sustainable development of the Chinese economy,” Jacquin said.

In addition, Elkem Silicones continues to invest in China in order to further provide stable supply services and prompt technical support to local customers throughout China. Recently, Elkem Silicones invested around RMB 2.9 billion to upgrade its Xinghuo silicone plant in Jiangxi, aiming to increase its production capacity of high-quality products by more than 50%. This is the largest investment by Elkem Silicones in China over nearly 10 years.

At CIIE 2021 from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai National Convention and Exhibition Center, Elkem Silicones is making its debut in the Consumer Products section (Booth A6-02, Hall 5.1).
