Reduce Waste, Choose Additive Manufacturing

Additive Manufacturing, also called 3D Printing, is the most recent material processing technology in the industry. Digital and connected, it has many technical advantages and makes a lot of sense when it comes to shifting to a more sustainable production and consumption. This is the ideal technology to reduce waste and produce small quantities.

Simply put, Additive Manufacturing is about producing the quantity you need, when you need it and where you need it. It allows for a very local production, with no shelf life threat nor scale economies - that often implies mass production - and makes prototyping and small batch sizes easy. Not only will it help you reduce your waste but also save on transportation and storage costs, two big contributors to the total carbon footprint of end-products.

Additive Manufacturing is a process that builds up components in layers by depositing materials in three dimensions. It is the opposite of traditional manufacturing modes as milling, turning etc. that eliminate materials from a block or an initial mold. It is therefore more efficient since it drastically limits waste generation. This is, indeed, one of the key strengths of this process: waste is reduced to a minimum and there are many solutions being studied to address the remaining packaging, be it by switching to renewable material or, when feasible, simply removing them!

Elkem Silicones ’engineers have quickly seen the potential of this new technology and how it would fit with the versatility and durability of silicones, the only rubber and elastomer that is currently printable. Elkem Silicones has developed a production process based on extrusion principles called Liquid Deposition Modeling (LDM). This process allows the use of a new series of customized silicone materials: the AMSil ™ series. You can design high-performance parts with 100% silicones with complex geometries, overhangs that are impossible to achieve using traditional dies, molds and machining in order to create elastomeric parts / objects by direct printing.
