Frequently Asked Question about Silicones and Foam Control & Surface Agents
What is a silicone antifoam?
Silicone antifoam is based on silicone fluids and hydrophobic silicas. Foam control agents could be effective as antifoams to prevent foam formation, or/and as defoamers to destroy existing foam. They can be also used as deaerating agents that prevent bubbles. Silicone antifoams are available as fluids, emulsions, compounds or powders, they can be used in many different markets and applications, in large pH and temperature range.
With our SILCOLAPSE™ silicone antifoams range you make sure that you will get the best performance, higher process efficiency and reliability.
What antifoam is used for?
Antifoams, defoamers can be also named "foam control agents". They are used to manage foam issues, as processing aids or as formulation ingredients. Foam control agent is used with very small dosage to control foam formation. Foam is a problem in many industrial processes, as it decreases production capacity , end products quality.
Our full line of Silicone foam control agents, as formulation ingredients or processing aids, make manufacturing more efficient and cleaner, improve the quality of final products, reduce waste and energy consumption and facilitate recycling. They are safe for people and equipment and comply with the strictest regulations in many industries
What is the difference between antifoam and defoamer?
Antifoams, defoamers can be also named "foam control agents". They are used to manage foam issues, as processing aids or as formulation ingredients. Foam control agents could be effective as antifoams to prevent foam formation, or/and as defoamers to destroy existing foam. They can be also used as deaerating agents that prevent bubbles. Silicone antifoams are available as fluids, emulsions, compounds or powders and can be used in many different markets and applications, in large pH and temperature range.
How to reduce foam?
Foam is a dispersion of gas bubbles, stabilized by surfactants, in a continuous liquid phase. Foam is stabilized by the viscoelasticity of bubble lamella, silicone products act by modifying surface properties due to their low surface and interfacial tensions that enables them to spread easily over the film. This causes foam lamella thining, drainage rate increase, enable lamella rupture to collapse the foam. The best way to reduce foam is to use our silicone defoamer products.
Depending on the foaming media, it can be SILCOLAPSE™ compounds for use in non-aqueous media or to make aqueous emulsions and SILCOLAPSE™ emulsions for aqueous media.
What can I use as defoamer?
Silicone defoamers are the most effective and compliant technologies to many regulations. The type of silicone technologies (compound, emulsion..) will depend on the application field and the use as processing aid or ingredient of formulation. Silicone defoamers grades are used at very low dosage from 1 to 500 ppm as processing aids and till 0,1 % as ingredients of formulation. It allows for safe water and energy.
SILCOLAPSE™ is the silicone foam control agent of choice to enhance productivity and quality in many industries. When compared to other organic antifoams, SILCOLAPSE™ silicones provide unique performances that are essential to your business.
How to reduce foam in wastewater?
Foaming is a common operational problem in many wastewater treatments plants. It disturbs effluent quality, reduces the performance of water treatment and can also overflow out of tanks with risk to the environment. Far more powerful than organic products, SILCOLAPSE™ silicone ranges are the best technology to avoid foam issues. They can be added directly in the tanks at very low dosage using a pump or added with a water spray system. They are safe to handle, easily dosed and readily dispersible, thus contributing to better water quality and processes reliability.
