Buildings of all sorts – residential, offices or commercial – have always been constructed and continue to be made with a variety of mineral materials: brick, stone, concrete, cement cladding, granite, marble, etc. All of these minerals have variable porous surfaces and are today exposed to more severe environmental and man-made pressures than ever.
For example, climate change causes greater fluctuations in temperature and rainfall. These weathering effects put strain on the structure as well as the water resistance of these materials. It is therefore essential, for example, to protect buildings against water absorption, as this engenders serious damage, including infiltration of moisture and dampness, formation of mildew and moss, loss of insulation, efflorescence or exposure to increased dirt pickup. Protection from moisture also makes buildings more energy efficient by reducing heat loss due to evaporation of wet materials.
Silicone water repellents therefore have the double advantage of reinforcing structural protection and reducing water infiltration, and in some cases can also be formulated to improve soundproofing. Silicone construction water repellents and sealants are also available in a wide range of colors and textures, which can improve appearance, both in the renovation of existing buildings or the construction of new ones.
